Madden Project

The Madden project stands as a testament to our team's passion for transformational architecture. When presented with a modest Zincalume cottage nestled within several hectares, our client's vision of harmoniously blending heritage charm with contemporary functionality intrigued and inspired us. Their desire was to preserve the cottage's essence while seamlessly expanding it into a cohesive living space that integrated with the natural environment.

Navigating the intricacies of planning approval, especially within the constraints of a Bushfire Management Overlay, demanded specific design needs. Our commitment to realising the client's vision led us through multiple design iterations, eventually requiring secondary consent approval from Council, but ensuring that the client was happy with the final design outcome.

Central to the design was the creation of a glazed passage, linking the original cottage to a modern industrial-style extension. This architectural bridge became the heart of the project, connecting old and new while allowing the inhabitants to enjoy the expansive living areas.

A careful blend of lightweight and masonry claddings, complemented by large timber rafters and raked ceilings, resulted in a visual masterpiece. The integration of exposed brick internal feature walls and a fireplace not only create a cosy living space but also contributed significantly to thermal massing and energy efficiency.
